The Colliar surname derives fron the occupation of Charcoal seller in the 11th century, the first spelling of the surname as it is now occurs in 1747 with Robert Colliar, his father James spelt his name Coallier. Until 1855 when official records began, spellings of surname very much depended on the Parish Minister.</p>
<p align="left">There is a record in the Foxe's Books of Martyrs of a Richard Colliar being burned at the stake as for his heretical Protestant beliefs, this was on the orders of Catholic Queen Mary.
